Junior championship
First round 21 April 2007The first round of the Junior Petanque Championship held at Les Quennevais, attracted 13 young players. Ages ranged from 7 years to 14 years and the entrants included a league player as well as some relative newcomers to the game.
Competitiors were paired into doubles teams and played 4 games each. An experienced player was allocated to each pair who gave a brief coaching session before the competition started, and then guided their teams through out the matches.
Some encouraging talent was displayed and all competitors took an enthusiastic approach to the games.
Most successful pair were Matthew Pinel (14) and Sammi Pinel (10) who won all their games and had a points difference of +28.
Three pairs each won 2 out of their 4 games; James Lawrence (10) and Jacob Romeril (11) with +5, Zachary Martin (9) and Keely Guegan (11) with +1 and Alex Thompson (12) and Rhys Moody (13) with 0.
Jade Perez, on the day after her 9th birthday, paired up with brother Dominic (10) and although they had not won their earlier matches, won a very close last game against James and Jacob 9-8. Wesley Bowen (9) and Harry Dodge (10) had some tough games but did gain one win against Zachary and Keely.
The youngest player, Gabriella Martin was only able to play one game, but did win this, in a triple team.
The next round of the Junior Championship will be on May 19th at Jersey Petanque Club premises at Les Quennevais.
Any young players who would like to join in the championship will be most welcome. Just turn up on the day (check in by 1.45pm) or call Elaine Paisnel 851580 for more details.
