Junior Championship 2008 - First round 29 March
Ten young players took part in the first round of the 2008 Junior Championship, including two new entrants: Marie Guegan and Ashyanna Cooper. There were some closely contested games.
The two players in the 12-16 group started with a singles game which resulted in a win for Jacob Romeril, the 2007 Champion. This result proved decisive in the overall positions, however Keely Guegan played well and went on to win her two remaining games. Jacob took the honours overall in this first round also with a net +13 to Keely’s -1. It would be nice to see some of those learning the sport at the secondary schools coming along to challenge Jacob and Keely in the Championship.
Eight players contested the 7-11 group, four of them winning 2 out of 3 games. With a 9-1 victory in the first game, Gabriella Martin took top position with a +8. Wesley Bowen lost a tough singles match against James Lawrence (last year’s Champion) but finished just ahead of him overall with +4 to James +2. Newcomer Marie Guegan also had a net +2.
Each of the other youngsters won one game and all showed enthusiasm throughout the afternoon, with the standard of play improving with each competition.
