2008 Junior championship - round six
Whether it was the sudden heat wave or last minute holidays before it is time to go back to school, there were just 5 players contesting the sixth round of the 2008 Junior championship which took place on the Jersey Petanque Club’s Les Quennevais terrains. These included one newcomer Eloise Dorans who, for a first time playing the sport showed good technique.
Stephan Tyler being the only competitor in the senior group, three novice adult players joined him and they played a round robin of three games, Stephen playing with and against each of the adults. While only winning one of the games, Stephen performed well in each of them and continues to improve his skills and tactics.
Four competed in the younger age group, where again each partnered each other to complete their three games. As three players each had 2 wins; the positions were decided on points difference. Ten year old Wesley Bowen took top spot with +11; Evie Le Breton had +5 and Cerys Thompson +3.
With just one more round to complete, both Stephan Tyler and Jacob Romeril have accumulated the required 12 scores to qualify for the overall championship. Jacob leads with 10 wins to Stephen’s 8.
In the 8-11 age group four players have the required 12 scores; Ashyanna Cooper (11) and Cerys Thompson (8) are tied at present for top place! Each has 9 wins to count and 3 losses and each have a net points difference of +27. Right behind them is Marie Guegan (10) with 8 wins and 4 losses and a net +39. Wesley Bowen also qualifies for the championship with 5 wins and 7 losses.
So it is all to play for in the last round, as each time one of these players wins a game, they can drop a loss and enhance their chance of becoming the 2008 Junior Champion.
The final round of the 2008 Championship is to be held on Saturday 20th September at Carrefour Petanque Club’s premises at Clos Nicolle, Mont Couchon, St Lawrence. Check in at 1.45pm and all are welcome. A barbeque for the competitors and their families will conclude the championship where the trophies will be presented to the winner and runner up in each age group.
