JUNE NEWSLETTER

F.I.P.J.P Affiliation and the CEP

The follow on from our affiliation to the F.I.P.J.P is to join the Confederation of European Petanque. To qualify for the World championships, Jersey players have to qualify through the European competitions. Plans are in hand to complete this.

Licences

The JPA will now be issuing licences for Petanque which will enable players to compete in licensed competitions in the U K and in Europe and indeed all countries affiliated to the F.I.P.J.P. These will cost £12 and need to renewed annually. Contact the secretary for details.

Plourivo Petanque club invite

The Plourivo Petanque club (where Colin and Betty Vibert now play) have invited players from Jersey to travel to France on Friday 21st August to play against a team from their club on the Saturday. A trip to Isle De Brehaut may also be arranged for the Sunday before travelling back to Jersey that evening. The most practical travel arrangements are to take cars, thus allowing flexibility to all and all are welcome – whether they wish to play or not. The local members are willing to find hotel accommodation for us and are very keen to ‘take us on’. The club play to quite a high standard so this would be an ideal way to improve our standard of play. If you are interested in this offer contact Elaine Paisnel 851580 for more details.

Selection for Jersey Team

Trials have been taking place for 3 weeks of potential players for this year’s Jersey team to play Guernsey in the Inter Insular on Saturday 11th July. The match will take place at the Carrefour club premises and will start about 10.30 to 11am. Spectators would be most welcome as the team would value local support!

Volunteers required…

The JPA would like members to volunteer to be scorers for the games in the Inter Insular. If you would like to help please let Mick Cotillard know. Lunch will be provided for all helpers!

2009 Magic Touch Island Championships

The first of the Island Championships (doubles) is now imminent. Played on 20th June at the Weighbridge, there will be approx. 20 teams competing. Last year’s winners Mick Cotillard and Darren Le Brun will be there to defend their title.

JPA Knock Out Cup

The preliminary and first rounds of the knock out have been played. Les Hirondelles knocked out Vagabonds and newcomers L’Homard Qui Rit and still in at the semi-final stage! Last year’s winners Occidentals and runner up Pioneers are still in the competition.  The semi finals will be played on 11th June.

Magic Touch Leagues

The Summer leagues saw the addition of 4 new teams. Of these, unfortunately Tonkingtons have had to withdraw as they have not been able to field teams, but the remaining 3; Blue and Whites (of the St Mary Club), Kerplunk and De La Salle, each of which began playing in the lunch time leagues, are enjoying the extended competition. Great to see some new faces in the leagues!

Condor Lunch Time Leagues

Here too five new teams have joined in the summer leagues. Those in division one are now becoming very competitive and with a little help from our coaches, they are improving fast!

Coutances v Les Quennevais

As a result of last year’s match between junior players from Les Quennevais and Coutances, there will be another this year. Due to the boat timings, the French team will once again come to Jersey and the match will be played at the Jersey Petanque Club. The match will take place on Wednesday 24th June and helpers would be very welcome. Contact Tony Allchurch if you are able to help.

And finally,,,,,,

New terrains are being laid in two more parishes! Chris Romeril has built one for the Parish of St Peter beside the Community Centre and St Clement have agreed to lay one across the road from their Parish Hall. So look out for more parish teams in the leagues in the future! And if you Parish does not yet have one, why not suggest it to your Connetable?
