JPA Magic Touch knock out cup 2009

Occidentals next victims of Les Hirondelles! Pioneers out by just 1 point!

The quarter finals of the 2009 JPA Magic Touch KO Cup were held last evening.

Cup holders Occidentals faced a Les Hirondelles team who had knocked out Vagabonds in the previous round. Les Hirondelles took a resounding 5-1 win on their home terrain thus taking their place in the semi finals. Presently playing to a very high standard, Les Hirondelles will be the team others want to avoid in the next draw!

Pioneers who were runners up in 2008 had the very closest of results and were knocked out by just 1 point by Wrinkleys!! The match finished 3 games each. After the doubles games the match was balanced at 2 games each. Thomas Glennie then won the single for Pioneers but Wrinkleys took the triple. A count back of the points in each game gave the victory to Wrinkleys with +24 to Pioneers +23.

Lunchtime league winners L’Homard Qui Rit met the experienced Outlaws who have won the Magic Touch full leagues on many occasions. They also faced the added challenge of being the away team and having to master the deep gravel surface – much different to their ‘home’ terrain at the Weighbridge. Having lost the first two doubles 13-0 and 13-2, L’Homard than won the next two doubles 13-12 and 13-1 to level the match. Unfortunately they were then well beaten in both the single and the triple.

And finally, the other new team Kerplunk had home advantage but were up against Magic Touch league leaders Taylormade. Here too, the first two doubles went to Taylormade but one game went to 13-12. In the alternate doubles Kerplunk won one game – again 13-12 but lost the other. Now 3 games to 1, Taylormade only needed to secure one of the remaining games for victory. They won the triples but Toby of Kerplunk restored honour by winning the single 13-9.

Both these new teams should be pleased with their efforts in their first full matches and will be making their presence felt in Petanque circles very soon.

The draw for the semi finals will be made at the JPA committee meeting on Wed 1st July.

These matches will be played concurrently on Thursday 9th July at the Weighbridge Gardens. Spectators are very welcome!
